How To Make Vegetarian Gravy

Posted on: August 17, 2011

Do you love thick, juicy, savory gravy, but don't want to use meat? This guide on how to make meatless gravy will show you how to make a white gravy that vegetarians and meat-eaters will both love.

Introduction

You don't meat meat to make a flavorful, satisfying gravy. This vegetarian version is great on biscuits, soy "meats," or anything else you enjoy smothered in white gravy. The best part is that it's easy to make, and can be done in less than 20 minutes. You can serve this recipe to just about any carnivore, and you probably won't hear a single complaint!

Step 1: Ingredients

  1. 4 Tbs butter
  2. 1 1/2 Cups milk
  3. 3 Tablespoons flour
  4. 1 or 2 garlic cloves, minced
  5. 1/4 white onion, diced finely
  6. 1/2 teaspoon sage
  7. Dash hot sauce
  8. Salt and pepper to taste

Step 2: Prepare

  1. Melt butter in saucepan on medium
  2. Add onion and garlic, cook until onion is transparent
  3. Add all other ingredients
  4. Bring to a boil, stirring or whisking constantly
  5. Simmer until thickened

Step 3: Serve

This gravy is best served immediately, but will keep for a few days in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Try pairing it with vegetarian meat loaf, Tofurkey, or other meat substitutes. You can also slather it over biscuits or even waffles for a country-style homemade treat.
